Perfectionism, pirates, and a free marketing class
January 14, 2010I have perfectionist tendencies. When I embark on a new writing project, a little monster appears on my shoulder and tells me it’s going to be a dismal failure. Life coach and author Martha Beck claims this is why writers drink. In my world, that little monster can become a major creative block.
There’s a cognitive therapy technique that allegedly helps banish these thoughts. You ask yourself what’s the worst thing that could happen, then deconstruct your faulty thinking by then asking yourself what’s so bad about that worst thing. Repeat as needed.
Here’s how that usually works for me:
Me: This is horrible. Nobody is going to like this. People are going to think I’m an idiot.
My Inner Shrink: Okay, what’s so bad about that?
Me: Shut up.
My Inner Shrink: That’s just you expressing discomfort. What’s so bad about feeling like an idiot?
Me: No, I mean it. Shut up.
Apparently I’m not big on sensible exercises I read in self-help books.
There’s been a new idea rattling around in my head during the past couple of weeks about how to better deal with my little monster. Since he’s mine (my monsters are always male for some reason), I can make him into anything I want.
So now the monster on my shoulder is Jack Spar Captain Jack Sparrow. When I find myself getting stuck or freaked out, I ask, “What would Jack do?”
I know what you’re thinking: the rum in my house will always be gone.
Never fear, I will not turn into a slobbering drunk. I don’t drink. I may, however, need a hat. A really big one.
My new strategy for breaking down creative blocks isn’t perfect, but it takes the edge off nicely. And textbooks be damned—it works for me.
Which brings me to the real reason for today’s post: I just finished putting together a free eCourse. It’s called The Creative Marketing Foundation Course. It’s primarily for artists and craftspeople, since it deals largely with selling physical objects, but creatives of all flavours are welcome to join in. Hey, everybody’s welcome. All you need to do is fill out your name and email address under the snazzy green booklet in the sidebar (if you’re reading this in email or your RSS reader, hop on over to the Studio Source to sign up).
The Creative Marketing Foundation Course is short and sweet: six lessons that translate mainstream marketing jargon and tell you how to adapt those concepts to your own marketing efforts (and quite possibly a bonus lesson, but you’re going to have to sign up to find out). Since it’s free, you can try it with no risk, and if it’s not what you’re looking for, no worries, you can unsubscribe easily. I won’t be too upset—I have Jack to comfort me.

I can do a Turkey with my hand and I feel that is creative genius just waiting to be nurtured, so I’m signing up for the class as long as you promise there’s no talk-like-a-pirate part, ’cause I’m afraid of pirates…really.
I’m sooooo looking forward to your awesome class!

No worries, Yolanda, there’s no pirate talk. The only ones here are safely in my imagination. I hope you enjoy the class.

Ha, I love this! The only trouble is that if I had Captain Jack Sparrow as the monster on my shoulder, I would be tempted to misbehave more often to get him to show up.
(Yolanda, I’m afraid of pirates too. Even the stuff on the history channel gives me nightmares.)

Sonia, it’s worse than you think – I have two shoulders. There’s probably room for young William Turner, too.

I’m with Jack, I’ll have the rum! Your course sounds awesome. I’m looking forward to seeing what you’ve got. And if we talk like pirates, that’s ok, don’t worry Yolanda, I’ll protect you.

Ok, I admit I had to look up Jack Sparrow (is that a sign I shouldn’t spend so much time on internet courses…) anyway that aside I’m signing up!
The fact I was able to at least recognise Johnny Depp makes me feel justified to do your internet course!

Rachel, it did occur to me that not everyone is as much of a pop culture geek as I am. But that’s okay, variety is a good thing.

Thank you Stacey, that’s a kind way to put it – everyone else is thinking ‘the girl needs to get out more!’ ;o)

I can’t wait to find out your technique for busting through creative blocks, Stacey. I sell services, but they’re creative services, so getting blocked is a big problem. Thanks for offering this!

I should start a poll – who do you want your monster to turn into?
[Reply]
Jack Sparrow isn’t a small brown-and-gray bird?
Thanks, Stacey, I signed up, too. Lord knows I need help and don’t know where to turn.

No, Sally, definitely not. Jack’s a little more, um, decorative. I think you’ll like the course.

Stacey, I forget way too often but the worst case scenario stream is a soul saver. I needed to hear that today.
I really like the way you are set up to reply to individual comments. I use WordPress, too. Share your fantastic ways!

Worst case scenario means you have nothing left to lose – and therefore everything to gain. Is that what you mean?

Oh, Larry. You do have a way with words.
People, if you need a name for something, believe it or not, Larry’s your guy. Seriously.

Aye, and I barter for olde rum.
